Classics come out for Pirelli - revisited

A while back I wrote this piece on Pirelli's P7 Corsa Classic, and I though it worthwhile to revisit it, since classic rally cars are making a comeback.

Italian tire maker Pirelli launched in 2011 a high performance tire that revives the golden era of rallying. Called the P7 Corsa Classic, it combines a classic design along with cutting edge technology, created by Pirelli's R&D for all cars currently competing in historic rallies. This is a segment of the sport which as seen tremendous growth in the last few years.

To help launch the new rally tire, Pirelli brought together some of the most iconic rally cars and their original drivers, invited an international group of journalists, and had everyone report to the foothills of the Alps, specifically, the famous Colle San Bartolomeo rally stage in Italy.

The source video is from Chris Harris [on cars] and features the cars below:

Lancia Stratos, World Rally Champion (1974, 1975, 1976) with the Fin Markku Alen at the wheel. Back in the day he coined the phrase: "now maximum attack". These Lancia's were fitted with a naturally aspirated Ferrari Dino 2.4 L V6 engine. However, some were equipped with a single kkk turbocharger which pushed output to a whopping 800 hp!

Lancia Delta 4WD, with the Fin Juha Kankkunen at the wheel, the only driver to become World Champion (1986, 1987, 1991, 1993) with three different manufacturers. The Delta had a 2.0 L turbocharged engine. The car brought to the event used a supercharged turbocharged (not a typo) combination that starts off with loads of torque and later brings the power on, some 500 hp worth.

Lancia Rally 037, with 6 time Italian Rally Champion Paolo Andreucci behind the steering wheel. The 037 won the World Championship in 1983 and runner up in 1984 and 1986, all with the Martini Racing Team. To take the fight to Audi, Lancia chose the supercharger over the turbo, to eliminate turbo lag and improve trottle response. However, over time it was no match for he rising tide that was 4WD.

The video below was made by Chris Harris and depicts his quite unique experience.

From what I can deduce, the first two drivers take it easy and are careful with the cars. The last driver, the Italian, on the other hand, lets it all hang out and takes pleasure in scaring the journalists. Watch and enjoy!

The Pirelli P7 Corsa Classic has a tread pattern that unites two distinct designs: A semi-slick dry pattern and a treaded wet pattern, in the asymmetric layout that is typical of Pirelli's ultra high performance tires.

So no more excuses for keeping them in the garage. Get them new tires and take to the tracks.

Thanks for reading.
