What do you do when you are leading a WRC rally by a wide margin? You take it easy and bring the car home...right?
In 2002's Catalunya Rally, Gilles Panizzi breaks with all tradition and does a 360 degrees donut drift at Viladrau stage 15 of the rally, much to the dismay of his navigator (who is his brother as well). I guess he forgot to give him a heads-up!
Gilles recognized the special situation he found himself in, leading the race by more than 30 seconds, and decided to treat the fans to a show. He knew that the corner at Viladrau would be packed with die-hard fans. This hair pin corner is a favourite of fans who camp overnight in an effort to secure the best spots and picnic there on race day watching the rally cars go by.
Amazingly, this move for the fan's sake only cost him 10 seconds.
