Drift

TGIF everyone. Today, something from our friends from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Keiichi Tsuchiya, a.k.a. Dorikin King
Modern drifting as a sport started out as a racing technique popular in the All Japan Touring Car Championship races. Drifting is a driving technique where the driver intentionally oversteers, causing loss of traction in the rear wheels, while maintaining control from entry to exit of a corner. Motorcycling legend turned driver Kunimitsu Takahashi, was the foremost creator of drifting in the 1970's. Keiichi Tsuchiya elevated the sport to new heights in the 1980's.

Officially, a car is known to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater that the front slip angle, to such an extent that often the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn.

The video below is of the 2009 D1GP Round 4 Okayama, which was won by Masato Kawabata. His drift move stunned all the judges, whom all awarded him an unprecedented 100 points (Japanese spoken, English subtitles).

Drifting is big in Curacao with a strong and very loyal following.
