Earlier this month Max Verstappen made his debut as a test driver in the top flight of motor racing. Not only did he get to drive for Toro Rosso during testing at the Japanese Grand Prix, but he set a record by becoming the youngest driver to ever take part in a grand prix weekend. And, as if that wasn't enough, he set the 12th fastest time, just 0.4 seconds slower than team-mate Daniil Kvyat. To top it off, Vestappen said he was "not even close to the limit".
Pardon my enthusiasm but after his father Jos "The Boss" Verstappen competed in F1 between 1994 and 2003, we have been longing for a the next act. Does it show that I am Dutch?
Max Vestappen on his outing:
"I think in general it was more about learning the car, there is quite some differences compared to the 2012 car so I just build it up lap-by-lap and by the end you get used to it....You have the G-forces and you can't simulate that... I was not even close to the limit. I was just driving safely without doing any crazy stuff because the main thing was to do plenty of laps."
And on the about all the procedures, Max said:
"The biggest challenge was just getting used to the car really. All of the systems you have to get used to. You have to work with the team and all the buttons on the steering wheel are new to me."
Well, it's always exciting to get new drivers into the mix, you know, to push the driving envelop a bit further out. Max, we wish you the best for the 2015 F1 season. Enjoy it for time flies when you are having fun!
Thanks for reading.
