Not one to complain but sometimes it strikes me the degree to which we elevate the importance of promotion. And I am sure that most don't even know it until it's pointed out.
Take for example the picture on the right. It is of a photographer snapping pictures of Tom Coronel, a talented Dutch driver, at Zandvoort. The picture speaks for itself, material for a promo using a close-up photo of Tom's helmet and steering wheel with the circuit's pavement and dunes in the background. Nothing wrong with it, given the means.
In contrast, if you wanted to take a similar picture, say a half-century ago, you'd have to not only have the means, but the courage as well. See the picture on the right.
You would literally have to strap yourself onto the race car and then hope that you get the footage needed. Heaven forbid the driver was still hungover from the night before and the now heavily unbalanced car caught him off-guard in a corner with a difficult apex.
Since self-promotion (aka selfies) is so common nowadays, you just go along with it but compared to the earlier days, we do look like wimps, in my opinion.
Thanks for reading.
