Racing across the Empty Quarter

Since the Dakar Rally is just a month away, I though it worthwhile to pull out this cool video by Land Rover. Instead of just showing comparisons in order to back up their best-in-class claims, like often done in modern marketing, these folks just make a great product and then go out and put to the test..... in what is considered the largest sand dessert in the world.

Though you may have seen this video, as it is a year old, it is interesting to revisit this feat. The 47-year old Spanish off-road racer Moi Torrallardona piloted the Range Rover Sport from Wadi Ad Dawasir in Saudi Arabia, across what is known as the "Empty Quarter", to the United Arab Emirates in just 10 hours and 22 minutes. The SUV averaged about 52 mph across the 527-mile route, known for its inhospitable terrain and temperatures. The only modification made to the car was the addition of a skid plate for the underside of the SUV.

In a move similar to that of past LMP1 Le Mans endurance race winners, who are taken to the Goodwood Festival of Speed the weekend following the race, the Range Rover Sport made the coolest entry at the Dubai Motor Show, all dirty and scratched but with a story to tell.
