Motorsport and the Gulf

Being a Porsche fan, it was only natural that this video on FB caught my attention. It is of Ebrahim Kanoo Racing's EVOMS EVT1000 997 Turbo record setting pass at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The tiptronic resets the Porsche Tiptronic World Record again, running 9.77 @ 242 KM/H (150 MPH) at full weight.

The time slip of the record-setting pass
The reason for this blog is not only to highlight what an amazing car the Porsche can be, but also to help educate us about the Gulf region businesses.

When talking about the Gulf, most of us immediately think of the oil rich area where the petrodollar flows freely. However, this is not always the case.

Take for example the above mentioned race team.
It stems from a business conglomerate called Ebrahim K. Kanoo group of companies. It is a pioneer of the automotive industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain since 1952, and not only is the exclusive distributor of cars such as Toyota and Lexus, but also of automotive services, such as vehicle leasing, automotive care, the sale of tires, paints, oil and lubricants, batteries and pre-owned cars. It also has a diversification arm, which operates in IT, power solutions, security, and consulting. So as you can see, a pretty serious conglomerate built on decades of merchant business. The Toyota distributorship they have since 1966!

So next time you hear about motorsports in the Gulf, don't think that those guys didn't earn their funding the old fashion way!

Thanks for reading.
